This invention provides an ATG structure that employs quantum-well intermixing (QWI) to reduce absorption loss normally encountered in the movement of light between waveguides. QWI relies on the mixing of the quantum well and barrier materials of an active region, resulting in an alloy whose bandgap is intermediate between that of the wells and barriers.

The present invention provides a microscale pressure sensor that exhibits high sensitivity in a small form factor. The sensor is a bridged device in which a photonic crystal waveguide, surrounded by a photonic crystal slab, is suspended over a dielectric substrate. Under applied pressure, the photonic crystal waveguide is deflected toward the substrate, causing a decrease in optical transmission across the waveguide due to the coupling of the evanescent field of the guided mode to the dielectric substrate. The waveguide can be coupled to a photonic crystal microcavity, which increases evanescent coupling. This inventive design enables a higher sensitivity and better tolerance to manufacturing imperfections.

The fiber core overlaps with the waveguide to enable optical evanescent coupling via side surfaces of the fiber core and the waveguide. The technique yields a large alignment tolerance, hence is relatively simple to implement, and can significantly lower the cost of optoelectronic packaging.
