The invention presents a method for the production of a photon pair source to generate entangled photon pairs, where the operational behaviour of the source is determined by adjusting the fine structure splitting of the excitonic energy level of one or more quantum dots. The fine structure splitting can be adjusted by depositing the quantum dot(s) on a particular crystal face of a semiconductor substrate.

This invention introduces a quantum dot laser capable of emitting at a single wavelength within the visible region. Direct semiconductor visible laser diodes are smaller, cheaper and more efficient than other visible lasers. The emission wavelength comes determined by the specific configuration of quantum dots. A quantum dot layer structure, including one or more layers of InGaN/GaN quantum dots, is used to form a laser active region producing the output emission. InGaN/GaN quantum dots can be formed by self-organization, nano-patterning, or quantum well/barrier interface roughness.
